NEIGHBORHOODS COME TOGETHER FOR GREATER IMPACT
When neighbors come together to participate in activities that improve the quality of life, strengthen community trust and address issues, we move toward positive change in our communities. On December 1st, Bluff Park Neighborhood Association gathered neighborhood association leaders from Bluff Heights, California Heights, Belmont Shore, Alamitos Beach, and Rose Park Neighborhood to discuss the collective efforts neighborhood volunteers can take to improve our civic health through advocacy and action.
Attendees had the opportunity to hear from Melissa Mathews, Assistant Professor at the Graduate Center for Public Policy and Administration at Cal State Long Beach. Professor Mathews’ research focuses on the role of neighborhood associations in strengthening democracy and civic health.

Three main themes arose from our conversations:
- Increase our collective impact on issues.
- Develop collaborations and connections with the City (elected officials and departments).
- Engage residents for association boards and identify new volunteers to participate in community initiatives and events.
Representatives from each Neighborhood Association will continue to work on these efforts in working groups and we invite neighbors to join in!

Local progress and improvement is obtainable, we just need to come together to achieve it.
